Compensation grouting settlement trial
TM ROCO, Oosterweel link, Antwerp (BE)
As part of the Oosterweel Project (Oosterweel link), Future Foundations carried out a dedicated trial campaign to evaluate the effectiveness of compensation grouting techniques for controlling and correcting settlements in a raised railway embankment.
The primary objective of this campaign was to assess how quickly and accurately induced settlements could be mitigated using advanced grouting methods. To facilitate this, a series of injection pipes, reaching depths of up to 90 meters, were installed beneath the embankment. These installations enabled the implementation and testing of various compensation grouting approaches under controlled conditions.
Throughout the trial, multiple grouting methods and injection strategies were applied and monitored, with a focus on both response time and precision in achieving the desired ground movements. The results of this campaign provide valuable insights into the performance of compensation grouting as a reliable technique for real-time settlement control in complex infrastructure environments.
From Future Foundations’ perspective, this study demonstrates the potential of tailored grouting solutions to ensure the stability and serviceability of critical railway assets, particularly in challenging geotechnical conditions associated with large-scale infrastructure projects.
But guess what, the work of Future Foundations didn't stop with compensation grouting techniques on the Oosterweel project, it also involved new on-site technologies.
At the R1 North Tunnel, we have deployed The Cube System, a miniaturised slurry wall machine we co-developed with Bauer Maschinen GmbH. This innovative technology is currently being used to construct an underground polder wall, safeguarding the tunnel and its environment from groundwater. It demonstrates how Future Foundations continues to push boundaries, even in the most restricted spaces.
In addition, we also carry out sheet piling, soil nailing/micro piling, jet-grouting and ground anchor works as part of our integrated ground engineering approach, ensuring a comprehensive and reliable solution for complex infrastructure challenges.
