What is the Oosterweel Link?

The Oosterweel Link is a complex project that closes the R1 in Antwerp and connects the city with canal tunnels. This project focuses on creating space for comfortable living and efficient working. Investing in this project will result in a healthy, green and liveable city where people feel at home.

The city ring will be designed with attention to sustainability, climate resilience and changing living and working needs. This includes more greenery in public spaces and smart solutions for mobility and accessibility. These smart solutions are not only found in the project's objectives but are also used in its creation. A key milestone within this approach is the first-ever deployment of the Cube System.

Application of the Cube System

Between January and October 2026, the Cube System will be used on the R1 North subproject at the railway bridge on Groenendaallaan in Antwerp. At this location, an underground polder wall will be constructed. This structure prevents groundwater from entering the tunnel and covering structures.

Using the Cube System, a slurry wall of approximately 142 linear meters, 30 meters deep, extending 3 meters into the Boom clay, is being installed under a free working height of just 5.1 meters.
