Foundation underpinning using micropiles

As part of the redevelopment of the historic Brussels Stock Exchange building, the structure was adapted to accommodate a new function and increased usage. This transformation resulted in higher loads on the existing foundations and required a carefully engineered foundation strengthening solution that respected the architectural and heritage value of the monument.

Future Foundations was responsible for the design and execution of the foundation reinforcement works, including the installation of micropiles and the construction of new foundation elements to transfer the increased structural loads safely into the subsoil. In addition, new lift shafts were integrated within the existing building, requiring dedicated foundation works executed from within the structure.

The project was carried out entirely from the basement level of the historic building, presenting significant technical and logistical challenges. Restricted access, limited working heights and the need to operate within a sensitive heritage environment demanded specialised equipment, adapted installation techniques and meticulous planning throughout the execution phase.

Micropiles up to 37 metres in length were installed to strengthen the existing foundation system and support the new structural loads associated with the building’s redevelopment. By combining engineering expertise, specialised equipment and extensive experience in foundation rehabilitation, Future Foundations successfully delivered a solution that enables the continued use and preservation of one of Brussels’ most iconic historic buildings.
